Hatha is about balancing body and mind. In Sanskrit “Ha” represents the esoteric Sun, and “Tha” the Moon. The practice of Hatha Yoga aims to join, Yoke, or balance these two energies. A Hatha Yoga class will typically involve a set of physical postures for body alignment, breathing techniques, meditation, mantras, mudra, and Shatkriyas or cleaning techniques.
Vinyasa is a subset of Hatha that is distinguished by its fluid transitions and movement through a series of carefully planned poses. “Vinyasa” means “to place in a special way”. The most visible benefits of Vinyasa are increased strength and flexibility. Because of the concentration on breathing, your lungs will get stronger. Even if you are in a non-spiritual class, the focus on the breath and the physicality of the practice will result in a more mindful, peaceful attitude off the mat.
A passive practice, Yin Yoga involves variations of seated and supine poses typically held for 3 to 5 minutes, accessing deeper layers of fascia. In Restorative Yoga you will spend long periods of time lying on blocks, blankets and bolsters – passively allowing muscles to relax and stretch. This practice will help you to sit longer, and more comfortably, in meditation by stretching connective tissue around the joints (mainly the knees, pelvis, sacrum, and spine).
